Windows and Mirrors Exhibit

For more information, contact Ed Flaherty at 319.621.6766 or Ann Stromquist at 319.321.9657 or visit www.windowsandmirrors.org

Area residents are invited to view Windows and Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan during the month of September in the lower level of Coralville Public Library. Windows and Mirrors consists of 25 murals depicting the impact of the Afghanistan war, the longest in U.S. history, on the civilian population caught in its crossfire. Also included are reproductions of drawings by Afghan children, the youngest victims of war. The exhibit is the result of a 2009 call by the American Friends Service Committee to artists seeking contributions for a traveling memorial to Afghan civilians who have died in the war. A New York Times review of Windows and Mirrors reflects that the exhibit “will evoke a past era when murals made bold political statements and spurred frank discussion about foreign policy.”

A reception celebrating the opening of Windows and Mirrors is scheduled for Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 1 to 3:30 pm in the library’s Meeting Room A, adjacent to the exhibit. This event is free and open to the public.

Local organizations joining with American Friends Service Committee to sponsor Windows and Mirrors include Iowa Veterans for Peace, PEACE Iowa, Iowa United Nations Association, Physicians for Social Responsibility, the Iowa NEA Peace and Justice Caucus, Iowa City and West Branch Friends (Quaker) meetings, First Mennonite Church, Scattergood Friends School and Farm, the Social Justice Coordinating Committee of UUSIC, and the West Branch Religious Council. Windows and Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan is accessible from September 1 to 30th any hour the library is open: Monday through Thursday, 10am to 8:30pm; Friday, 10am to 6pm, Saturday, 9am to 4:30pm, and Sunday 12 noon to 4pm.

08.06.2011 Poemics:A Language Arts "Poem Strip" Workshop
Iowa Youth Writing Project
Fall 2011

Age group: junior high and high school students
Time: Saturdays, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Dates (4 sessions): September 10, September 17, September 24, October 1 (and a final event in downtown Iowa City the weekend of October 8)
Location: Coralville Public Library
Register online at: www.iywp.org

This free program fuses poetry with comics, university with community, and youth with writing and reading. Participants will use the comic-strip form as an unexpected tool for “close reading” of classic poems, unlocking their own potential as readers, writers, and artists. Rather than rushing to try to summarize what a poem is “about” (which is the test-taking mentality that often scares readers away from poetry), we’ll explore the specifics of what makes poetry wild and wondrous, letting poems keep their madness and mystery while gaining some insight into how the language of poetry moves (and moves us). By the end of the workshop, we’ll have created our own “poemics” or “poem-strips,” poem/comic hybrids that will be published in book form and displayed at an event for family, friends, and the community during the “Comics, Creativity, and Culture: Interdisciplinary and International Perspectives” symposium at the University of Iowa the weekend of October 8th.
Enrollment is limited, so sign up now! To register for this program, please visit www.iywp.org and register online. Although scheduling conflicts occur, please plan to attend all four workshop dates if you register. Got questions? Email theteam@iywp.org or call us at 319-804-9979.

—IYWP thanks its partners, University of Iowa Arts Share and the Coralville Public Library, for making “Poemics” a reality—

05.12.2011 Library Endowment Established

The Friends of the Coralville Library and the Coralville Public Library Foundation announced Thursday the establishment of an endowment fund for the library, in honor of the Library’s 50th Anniversary.

The announcement was made at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Coralville Library, Thursday night, May 12, 2011, by Friends President and local author Dori Butler, and Coralville Public Library Foundation Treasurer Diana Lundell.

The Friends and the Foundation contributed $5,000 each to establish the endowment in the Coralville Community Fund within the Johnson County Community Foundation. The organizations will provide $5,000 each for the next five years, to achieve at least a $50,000 endowment by 2015—the library’s 50th Anniversary.

Butler noted that an endowment fund can play a key role in meeting Library needs of the future. “By keeping the principal intact and only spending the interest, it becomes a permanent source of seed money for new, innovative projects as well as supplementary funds to enhance current programs.”

Lundell said while supporters of the Library can still make contributions to the Friends or Foundation, the endowment fund may be an incentive for some donors because of tax credits available on funds donated through community foundations. “While our establishing gifts were made by the Friends and Foundation, we certainly welcome gifts from individuals. We would love to exceed our goal of $50,000, since a larger endowment would mean more resources for programs and services.” she said

For more information about making a contribution to the endowment, contact Lundell at 351-1125.
