Weightlessness by Katy

“I can’t believe we will get to fly in a plane with no engine!” Megan exclaimed. She was one of my closest extended family members. We were, and are, almost exactly alike. We understand one another simply because we have known each other for as long as we can remember, and then some besides. She called me “Couz”, and I called her (much against her will) “Megsy.”

Meanwhile, my sister Emily stared blankly out of the car window as Dad parked the car in the best parking spot. Emily had tied her perfect, long blonde back into its typical ponytail. I did not know her well then, she had graduated recently from high school. She rushed to so many choir practices and play rehearsals that I hardly ever saw her. Emily wanted sing more than anyone else, and she planned to, whether anyone liked it or not. Emily didn’t compete; Emily hated confrontation. She differed from Sara but somehow exactly like her. Maybe it was the same blonde hair.

We got out of the car and eventually found Sara and Dave. Together, we found the correct runway. A few other people stood waiting, and Megan and I waited impatiently for our turn. I began to lose my nerve. Of course, Megan knew from the moment she heard about an engineless airplane that I would.

“You’re getting in that plane whether you want to or not,” Megan declared

“I know,” I replied. “But I am extremely terrified of that engineless contraption. How is it supposed to fly?”

“Contraption? Isn’t that an awfully big word for a kid your age?” Megan retorted, in an attempt to get me off the terrifying subject of gliders and into the age-old subject of, well, age."
