However, just because Walter was stopping and letting Carry catch up to him, that did not mean at all that he was giving up. The anger that had slowly built up each time that the bullies had caught him was now so big that he could not contain it any longer. He was furious at each and every one of those bullies. He wanted nothing more than to hurt each of them so badly that they would have the scars the rest of their lives. He thought of a time when he had run home crying to his parents and his father had cuddled him in his arms and then as Walter began to slowly stop crying, his father had started to explain that bullies were often just mean for no reason but sometimes they had a reason. He had said that the best way to stop a bully would be to find out if they had a reason or what that reason was. He ran over to Carry who was close behind him. He paused, trying to think of a way to question her about what her reason might be but he saw that he had no time. Carry looked surprised to see Walter coming towards her and in the second that she stood still, not knowing what to do, he pounded her in the arm. He sprinted right past her and met next with Michael. Michael also looked surprised to see Walter coming towards him. Not wanting to hit Michael too, Walter curved to the right and darted past him. With that, he ran on to Daun who brought himself into his usual pose of thinking. Walter knew that if it weren’t for Daun, Carry and Michael probably wouldn’t be beating him up every day. But he also knew that if there was a reason for Daun to beat him up, and if he found that reason, that would be the thing that would make his father prouder of him, even then if he had beat up all three of them.

Just as Daun was snapping his fingers to show that he had thought of what he was going to do to Walter, Walter shouted,

“No! Wait!”

“What is it you little piece of nothing?” Asked Daun contemptuously. Thinking of no better way to say it, Walter said,

“You beat me up every day. No one else, it’s always me. There must be a reason, there must be. What is it? Maybe I can change.” When Daun spoke, he sounded a little nervous.
