That’s why he was so alert and ready for the bell; because he didn’t want them to catch him. Then his watch started beeping to show that it was 3:00 and he sat straight up, knowing that the bell was going to ring any second. But then, to Walter’s surprise, the substitute teacher Mr. Lemor announced that he had something very special to say.

“Class,” He said. “your teacher has told us that she will not be able to come back for a while and I really can’t stay any longer because your teacher was supposed to arrive tomorrow. This means that your summer break will be starting earlier than usual this year. It has been wonderful getting to know you all and I thank you all for your cooperation this week. Goodbye class.” He took a bow, rang the bell, and walked out of the room.

At the sound of the bell, Carry impulsively looked up just in time to see Walter heading past the teacher and out the door. She too jumped up and raced out the door fast as she could go. She had had a bad day and nothing cheered her up so much as catching Walter when he least wanted it. She was sure that he would be dying to get home without them catching him because then they wouldn’t see him again until summer break was over. At this thought, she forced herself to run a little faster.

If someone were to ask Carry why she bullied Walter, she would probably say that it was because Daun did and she was Daun’s friend. However, if she would admit it – which she certainly wouldn’t – she would have to say that it was a matter of pride. She was very slow at learning in school and she felt that it would make people look up to her and admire her more if they saw that she was able to beat someone up. Finally she saw Walter slowing to a stop; he must have realized that she was definitely going to catch him.
