“The only reason I beat you up before anyone else is
because you’re a little squirt and you never fight back.”
“Listen to me Daun, I know there’s another reason.”
Said Walter who really knew nothing of the sort but felt that he had
to try. “Please, tell me what it is. I promise you, I will try and
change.
“I – well, I mean, oh alright! I’ll tell you – show
you rather.”
“Alright, what is it?” Daun’s finger shook as he
pointed to a tiny rundown house that looked no bigger than a barn.
“Look!” He exclaimed. “I mean would you just look at
it?” Trying to figure out what a little house had to do with anything,
Walter looked. “That place is not fit for a family of 4 to live in.
Not at all!” Slowly comprehension dawned on Walter and he realized
that that house up there was Daun’s house.
“But – it – that – it couldn’t be1”
“Well it is!” Said Daun bitterly. “Now you have my
reason. Anything else you’d like from me?”
“But Daun!” Walter cried out. “That’s terrible. I’ll
talk to my parents as soon as I get home. I’m sure they can figure out
something to do to help. Oh I’m so sorry Daun.” Daun’s face was red
and he was looking down at the ground as he said in a low voice,
“No, it – it was me. It was my fault. I should just
have told you in the beginning, before I started beating you up.
Please would you – would you except my apology?”
“All is forgiven.” Walter told him gently. “All is
forgiven.” And he walked on home.
The next year, each day when school got out, He walked
home slowly and leisurely, often pausing along the way to splash in a
stream or climb up a tree. Walter Bean was never again afraid of
bullies
