Walter Bean was slouching down in his chair at school
but, although you might not guess it from his tired appearance, every
second he was alert and awake just waiting for the bell to ring. For
right now, he was safe from bullies, but when that bell rang
dismissing him from school, they went right for him.
The reason that he was always the target for bullies
was a simple one; he never put up a fight like everyone else did. The
way he thought about it, he couldn’t see the point. He had tried it
once or twice and they’d just beat him up worse. Of course, they could
beat up pretty much anyone in the grade; it was just that it took more
strength to beat up someone who was fighting back and they all much
preferred the easier work. Now he thought it smarter just to let them
attack until they got bored and left. However, although that was one
reason that Walter got beat up, that wasn’t the only one.
A reason that Walter didn’t know of or even suspect
had to do with money. For one of the people that bullied him most,
Daun, was incredibly poor and had been living mainly off welfare for a
long time. Daun knew perfectly well that Walter on the other hand, was
incredibly rich – the richest kid in school, in fact. Daun hated
Walter for it, hated him with intensity greater than any other feeling
inside him. It made his face turn pale just thinking about Walter. Oh
how he loved those evenings after school that he and his pals Carry
and Michael caught up with Walter.
Every day after school it was the same old thing. The
second the bell rang Daun would look up to see Walter and Carry both
leap up and bolt out the door with Michael a little behind them. He
was usually pretty confident that Carry would catch Walter; she was
the fastest kid in school. He would usually just sit there for a few
minutes spacing out and then finally, he would stand up and start
moseying on over in the direction that he, Michael, Carry, and Walter
all lived.
