A
Non-Systematic Treatise on Art: A Comparative Analysis of Sleight of
Hand
by Acatalepteron
Magic
Whirling fingers, coins flashing
There. Gone.
It is there
It’s gone
Sleight of hand
Suspension of disbelief
Let yourself be surprised
For a moment, laughter
Sure it’s real, but it’s not
Then it’s gone, but did you really see it at all?
See the poetry?
See the magic?
Vermeer: light and shadow
Dancing on a canvas
The expression caught and held
So perfect
You know that girl
But of course you don’t
Thoughts fading into the shadows
You know she isn’t there
But she is
Sound, Caravaggio, Cezanne
Hear the footsteps, fading quickly
Can you hear it
Hear the rustling, the wind in the trees
The paint on the canvas
Trees dancing, waving
The paint is flowing, it rustles
Horses bulging
Pressing against the picture plain
It just a trick, they’re cheating
There is no horse
But you can smell the blood
Magic
A man leaning out of a picture
It’s flat, but it’s not
A splatter of paint, a simple drop
Spread on the canvas
And there’s a face
Where did it come from?
Does the artist even know?
Magic
Sleight of hand
Poetry: the dancing coins
Cards fading, reappearing for a second
Than gone again
It’s just a silly show
Children laugh
But it’s not
See the poetry
See the magic
Captured on the canvas
It’s only sleight of hand
