“You imbecile!” She hissed, “How dare you come to defy me? If my daughter harbors ill feelings, she should come to me herself, the weakling. I am ashamed to know her…I should have killed her when I had the chance.”

Morgan erupted in an outburst of anger, “Come herself? Perhaps you haven’t noticed the state into which you and your son have so unceremoniously thrown her. She can barely speak, her husband maltreats her…she wishes she was dead! You would grant her a favor to kill her now. Living in such a way is worse than death. How can you be ashamed of a woman who is weak if it was you who created that weakness? She needs her name, Mildred, and I have come to collect it from you.”

Mildred laughed shrilly, unperturbed. “You fool! Thinking she sent you because she had faith in you! With what lies did she deceive you?”

“I have received lies and deception from no one but you,” Morgan replied angrily. “Either give me the name, or die!” He held up the dagger in his hand as though it were a sword; for the first time, Mildred was slightly abashed.

“And she gave this to you, did she? For protection?” She tried to sound incredulous, but shrank from the thing as if it were a poisonous insect.

Morgan advanced a few paces, and Mildred backed away, staring at him in fear and frustration. “Name…name…my daughter’s name…”

“Yes? Tell me…perhaps I shall spare your life.”

Mildred laughed unexpectedly. “Idiot!” She cried, “You don’t even know what you are holding!”

“Perhaps,” Morgan smiled cunningly, “I shall test it out on you, to see what sort of weapon I have come to own.”

Mildred shrank away once more. “But…you do not control…at any moment it could turn…” She was flustered. Suddenly she cried out to no one, “NAMELESS! Wherever you are, hear me now! You can have your name…just leave me in peace…I beg of you!”
