Nameless laughed bitterly. “Of course we shall…but not
under circumstances to your liking. Sadly, they shan’t be
circumstances that I will embrace either. Fate is cruel, Morgan, and I
am not strong enough to fight it. There is one who can, however…” She
glanced away from him, then stared deep into his eyes. “There is one
who can. Oh, yes…be on the lookout for your son. You will know him
when you see him—remember, three weeks.” A flicker of her old smile
returned, and then it was gone. She walked away from Morgan as he
pondered this, and when he finally looked up he only caught a brief
glimpse of her small form disappearing into the woods, swallowed by
darkness. Then he turned as well, and made his way up Bassings Hill to
his people.
A hero’s welcome awaited him. Apparently, he was believed to have gone
off on his own to finish off some of the Easterly stragglers. He told
no one his true reason for crossing the border, playing along with the
other knights who asked him to tell them stories of the deaths he had
caused and craved detailed accounts of the Eastern women. Before
nightfall, he went to bed under the pretense that he had much to think
about—many of his friends found this highly unusual; he normally
stayed up through the night, drinking and talking, after major
battles. However they shrugged off ill feelings by assuring each other
that their companion was merely worn out from his odd journey.
Morgan couldn’t sleep, no matter how hard he tried. He realized that
he had left the East on the same day that he had arrived merely one
week previously. Nameless had been right. With this in mind, he
couldn’t help wonder what would happen within two weeks. Would a
mysterious man appear and try to destroy him? Would Mildred turn up
and reveal to him her reasons for seducing him? His mind raced and
kept him tossing and turning until morning. By the time he finally
rose, the sun was high in the sky and he was alone in the Knights’
barracks. He missed his conversations with Nameless and wished that he
could tell the others about what had actually passed in the East. So
many secrets, yet no one to trust. What was he to do now?
