“Come, come, Reuben,” Nameless reasoned, “If he does
not believe, why would he have come?” She smiled at Morgan, then led
him through the gaggle of farmers to the base of an astoundingly high
mountain. Morgan grinned at her.
“’Nameless?’”
“It’s what they call me in the villages. They, like you, do not relish
the thought of knowing a person who can call them by name and conceal
her identity. Dangerous, in these times.” She pointed to a dark hole
roughly halfway up the side of the mountain. “Mildred lives nearly
halfway up…yet that should be no large feat for a God such as
yourself. She will not answer your first call. You must ask for her
many times in order to be granted audience.” She turned to go.
“Wait. Will you be here when I return?” Morgan could not fathom trying
to fight his way through the woods alone.
“If you wish it, so it shall be.” Nameless smiled, then perched
herself on a nearby boulder. “I hope, for your sake, that you will
find what you seek, although I doubt very much that you will learn
anything of true use by journeying up there.”
With these negative words in mind, Morgan began the ascent to
Mildred’s cavern.
