It seemed as if the entire kingdom was seated in the dining hall. Three long wood tables, packed with people, stretched the length of the hall. The king, queen, their immediate court, and a few nobles and persons of rank sat at a smaller table at the front of the room. This room was built on the same massive proportions as the entryway. The stone walls stretching up to the high ceiling were covered with more tapestries, easily the equal of those in the rest of the castle. Huge windows filled the hall with light. Large marble statues of previous kings, queens, and generals surrounded the perimeter of the room. James and Quom crouched in the behind a statue of the king’s father, Fredrick II, and looked across the hall to the king’s table. The magnificent pork roast sat atop the table. The king raised his goblet.
“Let the feast begin!”
All through the hall, people began eating. The king took a sip of his drink, and began to eat some bread. James waited. Then the king took a bite of the pork.
“I notice only the nobility get the pork,” Quom commented. James ignored him.
“We’ll know whether it worked soon,”
The king choked suddenly. He coughed, and began to look ill. He coughed again and the bit of meat flew out of his mouth. The court wizard, who was sitting next to the king, stood up. Around the front table, other people were choking and coughing up their pork. The man smiled, turned, and walked out of the hall.
