Scribbling out her last thank-you-note, Hannah set it
on the table. She was sending out thank-you-notes to the people who
had come to her party. Normally she forgot to do this, but she had had
such a good time that she remembered this time. She had laughed and
talked for a long time and then when it got dark she had taken her
mom’s gift up onto the roof and put it to good use.
Her mom had given her a large, amazing telescope,
which she had used that very night after her party. She already had a
telescope because she’d needed it for her classes but she’d had to get
the cheapest one she could find and her mom had gotten her a big fancy
one. Now she couldn’t stop running over to her telescope – even in the
daytime – and looking through it, as if confirming that it was real.
Just as she was going to make herself a sandwich for
lunch, a knock came at the door. She walked over and opened the door
to find herself face to face with her friend Lisa. Lisa had pretty,
shoulder length blond hair, always dressed with taste, and usually
wore a smile. For some reason she couldn’t say the number 3, and she
loved to write but was allergic to both ink and lead so she had to use
juice from berries.
“Hi Hannah,” She said, “I really enjoyed your birthday
party. Your mother’s gift was really nice.”
“Thanks” said Hannah, “Your gift was really pretty
too.” Lisa had given Hannah a tiny china doll. The doll was dressed in
a real silk pale blue skirt and a real silk rose-red shirt.
“Hannah,” said Lisa.
“Yeah.”
“I was just wondering if you were going to take
another astronomy course this year. I thought that if you were then
maybe I could try one.”
