Then she took a well deserved break, brought some
cards into the living room to play solitaire, and sat down on the
couch. Before she dealt out the cards, she went over to turn the
fireplace on. She stopped for a moment to look above the fireplace and
see the big poster of the solar system that she had tacked to the wall
above it.
She was always amazed when she looked at it, so
beautiful… It had been a gift from a professor in college. She had
taken an astronomy course last year; Astronomy was by far her favorite
subject. During the course, she had gotten to know her professor, Jane
Sherman. Jane had moved to Iowa from California. They had continued
their relationship even when the course ended, and that year at
Christmas, Jane had given her the poster because she knew that Hannah
loved astronomy.
After playing solitaire for 45 minutes, Hannah forced
herself to get up; she needed to get ready for the party. There were
only 5 people coming; her mom and dad, her friend Lisa, Lisa’s sister
Leah, and her college friend Paul. She got a vase, put some water in
it, and set it in the middle of the table. Following this, she went
outside to pick some of the wild flowers that grew in her backyard,
she set them in the vase, set the chocolate cake in the middle of the
table, set out 6 plates and forks, and then stepped back to admire her
work. Even though she was a bit untidy, she was very artistic and the
table, – though simple – was quite pretty.
At half past 12:00 her parents arrived and her friends
arrived soon after and they all sat down and started talking at once.
They got out the cake and Hannah was about to blow out the candles but
before she could her mom cried out, “Make a wish dear!” Hannah closed
her eyes; “I wish there was life on other planets.”
