“So is that ‘being allergic to ink and lead’ thing also a Cuñan thing?”

“Nope, that’s just a Lisa thing. Alright now, where were we?”

“You were telling me why we wouldn’t need a lot of blood.”

“Oh, right. We just need to find someone who died very recently and pour the blood into his/her mouth and that will stop anyone else from falling sick. I know it sounds weird and I don’t get it any more than you do.”

“So how do you know that that’s what we’ve got to do?”

“I-I don’t really know how to explain it. I didn’t really see God. But – it’s like, I did. I don’t get it at all actually. All I know for sure is that somehow God told me that this is what we’ve got to do.”

“Alright, I don’t get it very well but I’ll do whatever I can to help save this planet.”

Hannah said, knowing even as she spoke what she was going to have to do.
Shel took a tiny bottle out of his pocket and took off the cover. Hannah could see that there already was a little blood in there. Probably from a Cuñan, She thought.

“Hold out your hand please.” He said taking out a little pocket knife from the same pocket. Shaking, Hannah held out both hands; she could see Lisa covering her eyes and she thought of how much Lisa had risked for her community and how much Lisa had risked for her and tears came to her eyes. And then all of a sudden a pain came to her and she jumped up knocking her glass over in the process. Wiping up her water she gave a smile to show that it didn’t hurt much. She turned to look at Lisa, clutching her hand, and said

“Lisa, thank you, I’ve been so busy listening to Shel about this whole disease problem that I didn’t even thank you for bringing me up here.” At this both women started crying and Shel shook his head muttering “girls” and yet he was very relieved that Hannah wasn’t mad at Lisa.

“And now,” Said Lisa raising her glass “I would like to propose a toast to Hannah”

“To Hannah” Shel echoed. Hannah smiled up at Shel and then at Lisa; she wanted to thank them for everything they’d done for her but she couldn’t find words to describe her happiness so she just smiled up at them with an expression of joy so deep that they just had to understand.
