“OK, so what time is the party at?”
“6:30 I think.” Hannah told her friend Lisa over the phone.
“Alright, see ya then. Happy birthday.”
“Thanks, bye.” Hannah hung up the phone and wandered out of her
bedroom and into the hallway. “I guess I should make myself some
breakfast.” She told herself, patting her rumbling stomach.
She walked into the kitchen, looking around in wonder. How had she let
it get into this mess? A carton of eggs lay open on the counter and
yesterday’s dinner lay on the table. Walking over to the dishwasher,
she found dishes that she’d washed yesterday. Crumbs were on the floor
and her favorite book, Pilgrims Progress, was on the counter.
Knowing that she would have to clean it up because she was having a
birthday party at 6:30pm, she made herself a quick sandwich, and then
started working on cleaning. She scrubbed counters, – pushing the
crumbs onto the floor rather than into the garbage – unloaded the
dishwasher rather untidily and shut the cabinet door with difficulty,
reloaded the dishwasher, swept the floor as best she could, not
bothering to pick up the pile… finally at 4:00 the kitchen was clean
and shiny – at least more than it usually was, which was saying some
thing –, very different than usual. It took Hannah about half-an-hour
to get the living room ready and then finally at 4:30 Hannah was done
(the living room and the kitchen were the only rooms that they would
be in.).
