Now when he looked back all he could see was the rocks. He wasn't even sure what there was besides rocks anymore. Ivan knew there was other stuff, but Ivan was following Him, and His trail only led over more hard cold rocks.

Ivan looked away from the distant light. He looked back down at the trail. He thought that it used to be real hard to follow the trail. It would be hard he supposed, over all those rocks, but not anymore. By now Ivan was real good at it. He could follow the trail where there wasn't any trail at all. It was getting even easier now, lots easier. Ivan was getting closer. Now and then he would see little piles of ash. Ivan knew that this meant he was real close now.

Ivan was following Him for a good reason. A real good reason. Ivan knew that. That was why Ivan had to carry It with him. If he ever let It go, well that just wouldn't do. Ivan knew that. He had to keep It. Ivan used to care about that in a white hot sort of way, almost like his guts were on fire. But that kind of caring didn't last very long. Ivan didn't think anything white hot could last long among such cold rocks. Now Ivan felt more like he was full of embers, but the embers never went out, So Ivan just kept on following. He had to.

Then Ivan saw something strange. He looked down and saw another pile of ash, but this ash was different from the other piles he had seen. Some of it was still glowing. It looked kind of like the lights from the horizon. Ivan looked at it carefully. The ash was important. He looked back up and kept walking.

Then something even more strange happened. Ivan heard something. It had been so long since Ivan had heard anything besides the wind and the dry leaves skittering over the rocks, that he didn't even know what the sound was at first. It echoed and bounced around off some of the rocks ahead. Ivan paused and thought, then he realized what it was. It was the same sound that Ivan's feet made when he walked. At first Ivan was confused, he looked down at his feet to make sure that they weren't moving. Then he wasn't confused anymore. The rocks seemed to strech out far in to the distance as Ivan walked around them. The noise was getting louder. Then, all of a sudden, Ivan rounded the corner.
