John rushes over to the admiral but it is too late;
the admiral’s life is slowly draining in front of John’s eyes. His
perfect uniform has a scorch mark in the center, right below all of
the decorations. John kneels down and asks, “What should I do?”
He replies, “You know what you should do,” and closes his eyes for the
last time.
The intercom buzzed to life and a face pops up, a Captain, who asks,
“Who won the engagement, anyone there?”
John gulps, remembers the lesson taught by Mr. Douglas about line of
duty, and thinks back to his father. “Son,” his Father said as laid
his hand on John’s shoulder, “I know you want to join the Navy. You
must remember, take responsibility and step forward. There will be a
time when you need to, so I impart my last word of advice before you
leave for basic. Take it to the chest, and think of how proud I am.”
He patted me on the back and I never saw him again.
John takes a brief breath and proclaims, “This is acting Rear Admiral
Campbell, the Grand Navy lives.”
