Abby handed me her present, wished me a happy birthday, and sat down. We then decided to open presents. I looked through the presents, carefully deciding which one to open first. Finally, I settled on a box that was wrapped messily with dark blue paper. I took off the card first and said,

“This says ‘Dear Annie, Happy birthday! Love, Sarah,” After reading the card, I turned back to the present and began ripping the wrapping paper off. After getting all the wrapping paper off, I picked up the box and read ‘Lego Land Castle’ from it. Beneath the writing was a picture of a big castle with people and horses. After thanking Sarah, I turned to the 2 presents left and began deciding which one to open next. I settled on a small present neatly wrapped in yellow paper with blue happy birthdays on it. I quickly ripped off the wrapping paper and opened up the little box inside. I found a pretty green watch and my face turned pink with delight. I knew it was from Justin for that was the gift I had asked him to get me. I thanked Justin and then turned to the last present which I knew was from Abby. Thinking about Abby made me burn with resentment but I tried to conceal it and I smiled as I started ripping the wrapping paper off the thick present in front of me. I made myself squeal with joy when I saw the book Little Women but I knew that I would never ever read it unless my mom got me a different copy.

Justin and Sarah both turned to Abby telling her that they’d both read that book and loved it and they thought it was a great gift. It was then, as I was seething with anger at Abby that I decided to do something to make them focus on me more. I thought it would make them like me if I did something that was a little unusual so I decided that I would pretend to be a neat freak and clean anything and everything down to the last speck of dust.

To start off, I told them that I thought we should move our sleeping bags and backpacks downstairs to where we would be sleeping because I didn’t want to clutter the hallway. Although I was furious with her, I pretended not to notice Abby and Justin rolling their eyes at me and I led the way downstairs. I laid my sleeping bag in the middle and made a fuss of making it exactly straight and putting the pillow exactly in the middle. By the time I was done putting my backpack and all of their backpacks behind things so they wouldn’t look messy, Abby, Justin, and Sarah were all waiting for me on the stairs. When they asked me what had taken me so long, I merely told them what I’d been doing. My face burned with resentment as they rolled their eyes at each other but I said nothing.
