“So what’s wrong with that?” She asked defensively.

“Nothing, nothing at all.” I told her airily and then laid down and started trying to fall asleep. But now that I wasn’t doing anything else and it was all quiet, I had a hard time not dwelling on the fact that I’d been deceiving them all and that I had been mean to Abby. I couldn’t keep myself from crying a little so I stuck my head in my pillow. I didn’t think anyone would hear if I just sniffled a little. But then, to my horror, I felt someone tapping me on my back; I looked up and who should I see but Abby? She told me to follow her and she led me into the bathroom where she said,

“What’s wrong?” Although I was still feeling a little resentful towards her, I had to tell someone what I had been doing so I told her the whole thing: How I wasn’t really that neat, my feelings toward her, and everything else that had been ruining my birthday party.

“I – I see now that that was silly.” I finished, “But, could we – do you think – do you think that we could wake Justin and Sarah up so that I can tell them now. I can’t bear to keep it a secret from them any longer.” Abby told me that she thought we probably could and so we prodded Sarah and Justin until they were both up.

“What time is it?” Asked Sarah groggily. Abby told her that it was 1:00 and that I had something to tell her and Justin. I told them the whole thing just as I had told Abby and when I finished, Sarah leapt up and hugged me, followed by Justin.

I felt happier than I’d been at any other time on my birthday. And so, still feeling joyful, I went back to sleep.
