Adventures in Writing for teens -- Writing Stories with the WOW Factor!
Spellbinding stories. Page turners. Books that make you want to skip meals and stay in your room until you've finished every last word. Those can't-stop-reading-stories all have something in common-- they have strong character development, clear creation of setting and era (time and place), and a strong plot development that keeps the story moving. These elements all are essential foundations to writing great stories and the tools that every great writer starts out learning.
In this workshop, we'll work together to examine examples of writing for Young Adults (YA) that captivate. We'll discuss the ins and outs of how each story excels in it's mastery of these elements and wax poetic about the choices each author made and how they make the story sing. Then through prompts and practice, we'll do some of our own writing and begin weaving our own masterful tales based on what we learned.
Beginning and writers of all levels are welcome! Join us for an adventure in literature and to polish your skills as an emerging writer!
This workshop is presented by the Iowa Writers' House. IWH is dedicated to extending the Iowa literary legacy and to strengthening community among writers, editors, readers, audiences, and all those who honor the power of words.
