Absent:
The Board toured the construction of the building expansion at 5:30.
President Hatz called the meeting to order at 6:10.
The Board considered approval of the agenda. Jones moved the agenda be
approved. Cretzmeyer seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The Board considered the
minutes of the April 11th meeting. Martin moved
that they be approved, Smith seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The Board considered the bills for April. Jones moved the bills be
approved, Hatz seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The Board considered presentation by Neumann Monson representatives. Dave
Zahradnik showed them the concept they have come up with for a donor wall.
This was presented to the Foundation board at their last meeting, and
Galstad reported that they were unanimously supportive of it. They also
made the decision that all gifts given until the grand opening will have
an opportunity to be on the donor wall. The two dedication plaques will be
to the left of it. Jones asked about the cornerstone, and Galstad said
that Henry Herwig is talking with Kevin Monson about this.
Sarah Dodd showed interiors plans for office furniture and a color palette
board. She explained that the office furnishings will most likely be
purchased through the U.S. Communities contract, and that the office
furniture will probably be purchased through Saxton in Cedar Rapids, and
chairs will be purchased through Frohwein in Coralville.
Epley gave a report from the Friends. There will be a book sorting on
Thursday May 10th at 6:30. The next book sale will be May 18th and 19th,
and the Friends are always accepting good used books. Epley thanked Bill
Gerlits for advertising book sales on the Internet. She said the Friends
are wondering about dates for future book sales. Galstad said they will
probably not be possible between August 1st and possibly November 1st.
Epley mentioned that the Friends will also have to think about book
storage in the interim. Galstad has been emailing Deb Gill as she gets
construction updates.
Galstad reported on behalf of the Foundation. They are working on the
final fundraising drive. Diana Lundell has done a fabulous job of updating
the list; she and Galstad are in the process of revising the letter that
will go out. Foundation board members will assist in following up with
individuals after the letter is sent out.
Galstad gave the monthly Director’s Report:
- General Information:
Circulation was only down about 4% from a year ago. People entering the
library was down about 14% from last year. Internet use was down (for the
first time ever) 14%.
- Gifts:
$100 from Nadine Hain - Meetings:
Bi-weekly construction
meeting continue. They are now fairly certain that there will be no lower
level access from August 1st through November 1st. There is still no
estimate of how long the library will have to close in order to move.
Professional movers will be used, but it will be a very staff-intensive
process as well.
Epley asked when staff are telling the public they can no longer use the
meeting space downstairs. Galstad told her that there are not meetings
being scheduled in the meeting rooms currently.
The Town Center parking ramp fix is slated to begin later this month.
Galstad has asked that there always be 30 spaces available, this is still
under negotiation.
ILA planning is still going on. Galstad and Hampe will be in West Des Moines next week for a meeting.
Next Tuesday, a representative from ITG, a company the technology committee is considering for RFID, will be here to present. This company is a partner with Dynix, and the quote
Galstad was given is much more favorable than the other company under consideration.
- Events:
Children’s Summer Reading Kickoff will be on Tuesday May 29th from 5:30-7pm at Hills Bank.
The Teen Kickoff will be that Wednesday evening at the library. They will have a soda fountain downstairs, courtesy of Carlos O’Kellys.
Signup for the Adult Summer Reading Program will begin on Thursday May 31st, with a signup table in the lobby of the library.
There will be library staff on KCJJ the Thursday before the kickoffs, and staff have been doing lots of publicity.
On Sunday June 3rd the library is hosting a PowWow at the Rec. Center. It is through a Humanities Iowa Grant.
- Other Business:
Epley mentioned that the Friends would like to thank Jim Smith for coming to read the nomination letter for the Pat Dee Award at their annual meeting.
The Board officially congratulated Debbie Hatz on receiving the award.
Lundell asked how things are going at the IWL. Galstad reported that the children’s books have been moved to their own section of shelving.
The collection is still being added to, and Galstad needs to figure out the funding for ongoing collection.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, June 6th, 2007.
Hatz adjourned the meeting at approximately 6:55 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Ellen Hampe
Assistant Library Director
(Subject to approval at the Wednesday, June 6th, 2007 meeting.)
